Dear Mr. Henshaw: Pages 31 - 60

Hi Readers,

Please re-read Leigh's journal entry about Mr. Henshaw's book Beggar Bears on pages 56 and 57.  Why do you think Leigh wonders about the fathers of the bears so much?  What comparison is he making?

Don't forget to work the beginning of the question into your answer.  I am looking for deep thinking!

Thanks,
Mrs. Springston

  1. Dear Mrs. S,

I think that Leigh is so concerned about dads of bears because his dad left him just like the father bear left the cubs. I think that the father bear left its young because it thinks the mother is going to do all the work. But the mother did teach the twin cubs to beg from tourists in Yellow Stone Park. Then the mother bear died because one of the tourists fed her a cupcake with the plastic still on and she ate it! So that was sad. And that is why think Leigh is so concerned with the father bear leaves the mother and twin cubs.

  4. Hi Mariah,

So, you said that you think the father bear left because you thought he didn't want to do the work. Do you think that Leigh's dad is trying to get out of the work of raising a son, too? If so, why do you think he would do that?

Thanks in advance for your response.

  6. Dear Mrs.S,

I think that Leigh wonders in Beggar Bears what happened to father bear. Leigh feels sad because the beggar bear thought that the dad might have left. He knows how it feels because Leigh's father had left him. He feels sad because it reminds him that his dad left.

  7. Dear Mrs.Sprigston,
I think that Leigh was worried about the father because he was not there. Like Leigh's father was not there for him and the father was not there for the cubs. I think that Leigh
was scared that the cubs would get hurt by a ranger or another big and mean animal. The father should always be there for there kids or cubs. The father should be there when the mother died because the cubs had no one. This is why I think Leigh wonders about the father and the cubs.

  9. Dear Mrs.Springston,

I think the connection between Leigh's dad and the beggar bear is that Leigh's dad left him so he doesn't want that to happen to them. Also the cubs will be alone because the mom died. Also they would die because they won't be able to hunt for themselves.

  10. Dear Ms.S,

Leigh finished Beggar Bears in two nights. He said” it was a really good book. He wondered what would happen to them .Would they just go away? Leigh almost cried that night. The mother bear died because a stupid tourist fed her a cupcake in a bag and she ate the hole thing. Leigh thought that the book would be sad book. He was so concerned about the dad in Beggar Bears because he wondered what would go wrong or if they would get hurt or would they get run over by a car. Or they could have died because they didn't get enough food or water. Leigh was worried about the dad in Beggar Bears.
